The V c − σ 0 Relation of Galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
Courteau et al. (2007a) reported on the dependence of the ratio of a galaxy’s maximum circular velocity, Vc, to its central velocity dispersion, σ0, on morphology, or equivalently total light concentration. This Vc − σ0−concentration relation, which involves details about the local and global galaxy physics, poses a fundamental challenge for galaxy structure models. Furthermore, not only must these models reproduce the Vc − σ0 relation and its various dependences, they must simultaneously match other fundamental scaling relations such as the velocity-size-luminosity and color-luminosity relations of galaxies. We focus here on the interpretation of parameters that enter the Vc−σ0 relation to enable proper data-model comparisons and follow-up studies by galaxy modelers and observers.

The Evolution of the Mbh-σ Relation
We examine the evolution of the black hole mass stellar velocity dispersion (MBH−σ) relation over cosmic time using simulations of galaxy mergers that include feedback from supermassive black hole growth. Our calculations have been shown to reproduce the power-law scaling of the local, redshift zero MBH−σ relation and yield the observed normalization for an appropriate choice of the feedback ef...
متن کاملThe M–σ and M–l Relations in Galactic Bulges, and Determinations of Their Intrinsic Scatter
We derive improved versions of the relations between supermassive black hole mass (MBH) and host-galaxy bulge velocity dispersion (σ) and luminosity (L) (the M–σ and M–L relations), based on 49 MBH measurements and 19 upper limits. Particular attention is paid to recovery of the intrinsic scatter (ε0) in both relations. We find log(MBH/M ) = α + β log(σ/200 km s−1) with (α, β, ε0) = (8.12± 0.08...
متن کاملThe size distribution of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We use a complete sample of about 140,000 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to study the size distribution of galaxies and its dependence on their luminosity, stellar mass, and morphological type. The large SDSS database provides statistics of unprecedented accuracy. For each type of galaxy, the size distribution at given luminosity (or stellar mass) is well described by a log-n...
متن کاملA Quintet of Black Hole Mass Determinations
We report five new measurements of central black hole masses based on STIS and WFPC2 observations with the Hubble Space Telescope and on axisymmetric, three-integral, Schwarzschild orbit-library kinematic models. We selected a sample of galaxies within a narrow range in velocity dispersion that cover a range of galaxy parameters (including Hubble type and core/power-law surface density profile)...
متن کاملFundamental Planes, and the Barless Mbh-σ Relation, for Supermassive Black Holes
The residuals about the standard Mbh-σ relation correlate with the effective radius, absolute magnitude, and Sérsic index of the host bulge. Although, it is noted here that the elliptical galaxies do not partake in such correlations. Moreover, it is revealed that barred galaxies (with their relatively small, faint, and low stellar concentration bulges) can deviate from the Mbh-σ relation by δ l...
